Architectural Design Trends 2024

It is always interesting to look ahead to what themes and motifs will be important in architectural design in the coming year. There are always ideas to be embraced and insights to be learned by being open to the best work and best practices that come to the forefront. Let’s take a moment to consider what architectural design trends we may see in 2024.

Too Little is Less – and Too Much is Also Less

With all the uncertainties the world has experienced in the last few years, and is still going through at the present time, there is a desire to rely on what we know works. This doesn’t mean we’re unwilling to try the new, but it is more of a scepticism about architectural statements for their own sake. People are going to need to live in that over-the-top statement, and it’s easy to imagine them getting tired of it. Some design themes endure as classics because they are beautiful and exciting, and also very liveable. This is why we see a return to the classics – traditional and modern – reinterpreted with today’s sense of colour and placement, as an important aspect of architectural design trends going forward.

Natural Vibes

Figured timber and stone have moved to centre stage as designers look to create a more organic interest. These may show up in interior and exterior settings – a polished entryway flooring of contrasting mica-flecked stone inlay, or a dramatic set of high windows in a presentation space, rendered in light and dark figured timbers – possibly making use of advanced veneer technology and engineered timber materials to mitigate impact. Material is brought forward – paint takes a supporting role.

Complex Exteriors

The plain statement of unrelieved broad wall is not enough today – it may do great geometric things with window openings and insets, but something more is needed. Detailing in the form of surfaces with subtle three-dimensionality that plays with sunlight and nighttime illumination is more and more popular. This can be achieved at reasonable cost and with minimal effort by specifying engineered surfaces such as exterior-grade fibre cement cladding and plasterboard, available in an inspiring variety of surfaces and finishes – from the understated complexity of rendered cement to functional decking timber, to the bold and traditional high-relief of lapstrake style cladding. Fibre cement plasterboard panels have the advantages of being very durable, termite-proof and fire-resistant, while weighing far less than legacy masonry construction.

Big Colours

The trends right now couldn’t be more different – or better suited for each other. Vibrant hues of blue are showing up strongly, as are a range of warm peach and apricot tones. They may surprise by working quite well together. Both take their cues from the colours of nature, and we see these in furnishings and in detailing on exterior surfaces. We don’t see a lot of techno finishes, or minimalist greys and blacks. Clients look forward to relaxing in a welcoming, human-friendly space. They are getting all the techno they want right now from electronic devices and transportation – today’s architectural design trends say the home needs to be a safe haven that celebrates the occupants’ humanity and the close relationships that happen within.

Statements Being Made – and Lives Being Lived

The look ahead features strong points of contrast and colour, patterns that entertain without overpowering, an embrace of natural beauty through texture and materials, and above all a feeling of vibrant life, positivity, and presence. It is design for people – not simply to admire, but to experience and enjoy.
