Minimalist House Facade Design Ideas

Shape and form, balance and counterpoint. Colours and textures from the earth. Metal finishes and wood grain. Lighting as a design element. All these are part of the contemporary language of minimalist facade design. A presence that welcomes and protects – dividing personal interior space from the noise and confusion of the outside world. We consider some minimalist house facade design processes and expressions.

The Essential Mix – Geometry and Detailing

A minimalist facade doesn’t rely on fancy trim and complicated decorative wood and ironwork to catch the eye. Rather, the eye is guided by structural forms, accented with colour, shadow, and the fine detailing of practical elements such as windows and doorways. In many ways this is a more complex endeavour than following an established design pattern, which is usually based on abundant historical examples. When a minimalist facade is desired, new ground is often being broken.

Light and Dark – Lighting

In a minimalist house facade design, light is a key player. During daylight, deep recesses bring the interest of shadow to sleek, smooth walls – a light-coloured door may be visible in the shadow, suggesting what lies inside. The overhangs and setbacks natural to the highly geometric forms of minimalist design create a changing landscape of light and shadow throughout the day. When night falls, interior lighting comes into its own – often much more so than with traditional designs. At night, exterior walls and spaces become a canvas for the splashes and pools of illumination from exterior lighting.

Apart from Nature, Part of Nature

Paradoxically, minimalist facade design may integrate quite well to the surrounding natural world, sometimes more successfully than many traditional designs. The angles and planes of minimalist design are a complex counterpoint to the flowing surfaces of shrubs and trees – and they provide an excellent backdrop for presentation landscaping. Even modest gardens and plantings are brought out well by proximity to a minimalist house facade design.

Minimalism the Easy Way

Build a minimalist facade quickly and easily with weatherboard and external cladding. There are so many surface treatments to choose from. Easy lap cladding will give the look of a rendered wall without the weight, trouble, and expense of masonry work. Weatherboard with raised or recessed linear detailing creates a traditionalist style in a modern interpretation – an excellent finish for highly visible structures with broad dimensions. Weatherboard and cladding products made from fibre cement stand up very well to the robust Australian climate, while providing a layer of thermal insulation and fire protection. Offered pre-primed, they take paint readily, and premium grades will easily outlast similar wood-based cladding. Nothing finishes an exterior wall faster and keeps its beauty through the years so well.

Down to the Ground

When specifying for flooring and decking in facade applications and throughout a structure’s design, bypass traditional planking in favour of compressed fibre cement sheets. They beautifully replicate a familiar look while offering truly speedy installation and much greater durability. They are fireproof, termite resistant, and nearly immune to water damage. The different types and grades are available in a wide variety of textures and finishes – they’re right for everything from carpet underlay to outdoor decks.
