What is Foilboard Insulation? An Introduction

If you aren’t up to date with the new innovative insulation on the market you may be asking yourself, what is foilboard insulation? Foilboard is a fire-retardant insulation panel that is manufactured right here in Australia. Designed for easy installation, foilboard can be used under floors, in roofs, walls, and more. With excellent thermal protection, foilboard is especially effective in hot weather, making it perfect for Australian climates. Let’s explore more about what foilboard insulation is, how it works, and how it can be used.

What is Foilboard Insulation?

As the name suggests, foilboard is an insulation panel that is revolutionising the market. It is a lightweight alternative to traditional insulation and is made from fire retardant expanded polystyrene (FR-EPS) and is laminated with a layer of pure aluminium. Thanks to the materials used and the design of the foil board it is now considered one of the most energy-efficient insulation products in the Australian market. Made to replace bulk insulation, the boards won’t sag or delaminate like other insulation, and when installed properly, will last the life of the building.

How Does Foilboard Insulation Work?

Using its aluminium surface, foilboard reflects both hot and cold energy sources. That means that in the summer the heat on the outside of the foamboard is reflected off the building, and the cooler air inside is reflected back in. In winter, this works the opposite way, keeping the cold out, and reflecting the heat back into the room as it tries to escape. This is achieved by creating a thermal break with low thermal conductivity. It slows and stops the transfer of heat and cold, preventing the flow of energy between the two different sides of the panel.

What is Foilboard Insulation Used For?

Now that we have answered what is foilboard insulation and how it works, what are its uses? Foilboard has many uses in insulation, from insulating new builds to retrofitting older sheds. Some possible uses for foilboard insulation are:

  • Insulating under timber flooring in new and old homes
  • Providing a moisture barrier, insulator, and thermal break for new homes
  • Insulating against masonry and concrete pre-cast walls
  • Insulating under concrete soffits
  • Insulating suspended ceilings
  • Insulating cathedral ceilings
  • Retrofitting insulation for sheds, unlined verandas, and panel lift garage doors

Othe benefits of foilboard insulation are that the increased thermal protection means less need for heating or air conditioning, saving you big on electricity bills. The boards also provide sound dampening properties for your home, while being safer than alternative insulation as they don’t contain harmful fibers like volatile organic compounds.
