Different Types of Adhesives and Their Applications

Whether you’re looking to complete a construction project or are simply doing some DIY around the house, adhesives are some of the most common tools you will be using. While there are many different types of adhesives, and each is applied in different ways, they are all used to hold two or more materials together. Adhesives are made from a variety of different sources, such as tree sap or cement, and available in both regular consumer and industrial applications.

Different Types of Adhesives and Their Uses

Hot Melt

Hot melt adhesives are brought to liquid form using heat and is typically applied using a hot glue gun. They are primarily used in manufacturing and packaging, as they offer superior bonding strength while also being eco-friendly and possessing a strong shelf life. Different adhesives have different softening and hardening times when used for hot melting, so it is important to research the right type for your application before applying.

Pressure Sensitive

Pressure sensitive adhesives are some of the most common, as they take the form of tapes and other sticky materials. They are typically used for non-structural purposes, as their lighter and thinner nature makes them more suited for lighter uses. Pressure sensitive adhesives are also much each easier to be taken apart, making them a convenient choice if what you are applying will eventually need to be removed or reapplied elsewhere.

Contact

Unlike the other different types of adhesives, contact adhesives are applied to the two items that are being bonded together. It is applied to both items separately, then once the solvent has evaporated the two items are brought together and set into place. Contact adhesives provide excellent strength and flexibility and can commonly be found in rubber cement and countertop laminates, making it a popular choice for construction.

Thermosetting

Thermosetting adhesives usually consist of two parts, designated as the resin and the hardener, and they can come in liquid or gel form. One-part thermosetting adhesives are also available, but they are far less common. The resin and the hardener are mixed to obtain the desired setting time, and once set, provide excellent resistance to heat and harsh chemicals. This makes them a popular choice for bonding electronics and electrical components.
